Care should be taken when investing in a business who’s only real asset is its people; consultancies, advertising, small service providers dependent on one or two driven people, etc. It is not a hard rule as there have been some exceptional successes but for all those that make it, there are many that do not. If the people driving the business disagree or are headhunted or simply tire of the business, then it has very little left other than the goodwill the business may have built up – and that is not easy to exploit unless it is sold to another business. Do more homework before investing.
